NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF THE COLORED PEOPLE

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was established in St John the Baptist Parish in 1940 and led by Edward Hall (February 1905- May 19, 2001) at age of 35 years old. Edward Hall grew up in Reserve, La. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has existed for 111 years to date, and its origins trace back to 1909-New York.

The former Presidents of the NAACP branch 6077 of St John the Baptist Parish are: Edward Hall, George Clark, Dale Wolfe, Michael Carter, Leonard Triplett, Robert Taylor II. Presently, Shondrell Perrilloux has been elected the first Black woman President of St John the Baptist Parish Branch.

As President, Shondrell Perrilloux is most passionate about the economic advancement of the disadvantaged and under privileged persons. Shondrell Perrilloux unique skills and abilities qualify her to lead the newly revised NAACP in St John the Baptist Parish. Among her gifts, is to be a “Voice for the Voiceless.” She intends to create a Legal Defense Fund to assist people with competent legal representation to ensure civil rights are upheld. The Legal Defense Fund would be one of the very few within Louisiana NAACP chapters.

Branch 6077 has a rich history within St John Baptist Parish. Edward Hall and Thurgood Marshall removed racial barriers at the local registrar of voters. The action set a precedent that spread throughout the south. In 1944, the lawsuit filed by Edward Hall and Thurgood Marshall in the 5th Circuit Court of Appeal paved the way for black voting rights.

Today, the NAACP advocates for equality in six core areas: economic sustainability, high quality healthcare, equal treatment in the criminal justice system; voting rights/political representation and expanding youth and young adult engagement. The NAACP is not just for African Americans its for all persons of color that deal with any inequality. The goal is to provide equal opportunities for people in the community regardless of race. As of February 15, 2020 reactivation, the branch has more than 75 active members.

Branch 6077 has a primary focus to hold local government accountable to ensure that the residents of St John the Baptist Parish are given equal and fair economic opportunities. We intend to uphold the core mission of the NAACP.

We would love to hear from you!
